The SHC Counseling department is still open and here to help. We have taken measures to ensure adequate social distancing during check-in. Waiting room seating complies with distancing standards as well as in counseling sessions. Information on COVID-19 testing at the SHC is available on our home page.

If you are unable to attend your counseling session, please call for a "check-in" with your counselor during normal business hours. They will provide a 5-10 minute phone consultation with you for encouragement and to address any issues. We are aware anxieties are running high so we've provided information, , on how to manage stress and anxiety related to coronavirus disease 2019365体育滚球 (COVID-19).

This Helpline provides counseling and support to those experiencing emotional distress as a result of natural and human-caused disasters, including the coronavirus pandemic. Help is provided by phone or text. Deaf and hard of hearing can access using several means. Visit their website at  for more information.

Confidential Services

Confidential mental health counseling services at the Student Health Center (SHC) are available to currently enrolled students of Lamar University and Lamar Institute of Technology. 

365体育滚球A licensed counselor provides counseling sessions by appointment only, except in emergency cases. SHC counselors utilize a solution-focused model. They work closely with the SHC medical providers for medication consultations if needed.

What to Expect at Your Appointment

  • Arrive 10-15 minutes early to complete questionnaires and check-in
  • Initial appointment: 1 1/2 hours
  • Subsequent appointments: 45 minutes
  • Appointment fee of $10 billed to your Banner account
  • Failure to provide 24 hours notice prior to cancellation or no show fee of $25
  • A variety of evaluation and education techniques may be used, such as Anxiety Reduction Techniques and Effective Coping Skills
