COVID-19 Mitigation: What You Can Do

Review steps you can take to protect yourself and others from COVID-19.

Protect Yourself & Others
Face Masks Face masks are required on Lamar University campus, including in all buildings, classrooms & outside when six feet of social distancing is not possible.
Personal Responsibility Set a goal to protect yourself & others by practicing the mitigation measures listed here. Throughout the day, mentally check your progress in meeting this goal.
Social Distancing Stay at least 6 feet away from others.
Hand Hygiene Wash hands using soap & water for at least 20 seconds. Wash hands frequently, especially before preparing food, before & after eating, before & after touching face, before & after touching others, after using restroom. Use hand sanitizer, especially when soap & water are not available. On campus, use hand sanitizer placed near entrances, exits & high-traffic areas.
Respiratory Etiquette Cover mouth & nose with tissue or elbow if you sneeze or cough. Wash hands &/or use hand sanitizer as soon as possible afterwards.
Don’t Spread Germs Don’t touch your eyes, nose or mouth. Avoid touching others (handshake, hug, kiss, pat on back, etc.). Avoid standing too close when talking.
Personal Items Do not share. Clean & sanitize regularly. Personal items include phone, pens, computer, water bottles, food, eating utensils, toiletries, makeup, etc.
Self-Screen Daily for Symptoms Self-screen daily for . Symptoms include temperature or fever, cough, shortness of breath & fatigue. This is not a complete list of symptoms as our understanding of the virus is evolving. Everyone should self-screen but especially important in healthcare, athletics, labs, shared offices & any setting where mitigation measures may be limited.
Exposure to Virus If exposed or possibly exposed to virus or infected person, stay home. Especially important if you have recently traveled, participated in large event or gathering, have illness in your household, or have been notified by contact tracer.
Stay Home When Sick Stay home if you are sick, even with mild symptoms. When possible, attend class virtually. If an employee, use leave time or telecommute, if approved.
Call Your Doctor If you are sick, call your doctor. If you do not have a doctor, reach out to the LU student health center, local public health office, clinic or emergency care center.
Get Tested Find a testing site near you using Texas’ .

Create Safer Spaces for Learning
Classrooms Wear masks. Take advantage of smaller classes in bigger rooms. Avoid seating arrangements with students facing each other. Sit at least 6 feet apart. If 6 feet of social distance is not feasible, self-screen daily & take precautions (masks, hand sanitizer, disinfecting wipes, washing hands before & after class, etc.). Avoid talking loudly (viral particle transmission has been correlated to loudness of voice). Take virtual or hybrid courses, if possible.
Education & Research Labs Wear masks. Clean & disinfect common equipment. Avoid seating arrangements with students facing each other. Sit at least 6 feet apart. If 6 feet of social distance is not feasible, self-screen daily & take precautions in this table.
Computer Labs Wear masks. Take advantage of computer labs with at least 6 feet of social distancing & decreased in-person density. Use hand sanitizer & disinfecting wipes when sitting down at computer workstation & leaving. Avoid long lines or congregating in common spaces (printer, entrances/exits, etc.).
Study & Common Areas Library, Student Center, Rec Center, Auditoriums, Stadium, Concert Halls, Theatres, Exhibition Halls, etc. Wear masks. Use all mitigation measures listed for classrooms, labs, etc. Follow all applicable university, state & local guidelines.
Be Aware of Your Surroundings
High-Touch Surfaces Be mindful of high-touch surfaces, including doors & door knobs, desks, tables, restrooms, elevator buttons, stairway handrails, shared keyboard/mouse, etc. Use hand sanitizer & disinfecting wipes. Wash hands regularly.
Elevators Use stairs to keep elevators clear. Stand apart in elevators. Keep your mask on. Avoid touching buttons with fingers. Use hand sanitizer & disinfecting wipes. Wash hands regularly.
Lines Avoid forming long lines with long wait times. Follow floor signs (tape, chalk) demarcating social distance. Keep your mask on.
Communal Equipment Minimize use of shared equipment. Use hand sanitizer & disinfecting wipes. Wash hands regularly.
Hallways, Stairwells, Public Areas Be mindful of traffic flow. Avoid densely packed & narrow areas. Keep your mask on.
University Vehicles Physically distance (skip rows in van, bus), Wear mask. Increase ventilation by opening windows when possible. Be mindful of shared surfaces. Use hand sanitizer & disinfecting wipes. Wash hands regularly.
Live Life Safely
Residence Halls Follow all the mitigation measures listed in this table. Be consistent & mindful of others. Avoid common areas & spontaneous social gatherings larger than university, state & local guidelines. Follow Residence Hall personnel instructions.
Dining Hall & Restaurants Avoid densely packed areas & long lines with long wait times. Practice social distancing, including when seated. Choose take-out when possible.
Social Gatherings Follow university, state & local guidelines on social gatherings, including number of people, masks requirements & social distancing. Consider meeting virtually.
Rec Center Risk of virus transmission has been correlated to increasing level of exertion in closed spaces. Follow all mitigation measures in place at the Rec Center (social distance, hand hygiene, disinfecting wipes, masks, etc.). Follow Rec Center personnel instructions. Respect others.
Financial Transactions Use the university's online payment options & services when possible. If meeting in person, follow all mitigation measures in place at office & in this table.
Mass Events Athletic events, concerts, performances, etc. Self-screen before attending. Follow all mitigation measures in place at large events. Follow event personnel instructions. Be patient. Be courteous.
