LU Students,

The fall semester is quickly approaching and we know you have many questions about how classes will be taught. We have been hearing from students who would like to attend online only and others have expressed their interest in wanting the interaction of on-campus courses as well as the residential life experience. Additionally, for some students, their preferred learning style is face-to-face but would like to be in the classroom less and have some instruction online.

While plans for the fall semester are not yet finalized and could change depending on the pandemic at any given time, we are making every effort to ensure the safety of both students and faculty. As we all take responsibility for our health and the health of those around us, we encourage students to choose the method they are most comfortable with—inside and outside of the classroom.

Currently, more than 1,500 courses are offered online in any one semester and students will be able to enroll in these should this be their preference. There are several additional methods to allow students and faculty to “meet” along with fully online courses, including:

  • Some courses being accessible remotely via “live” webcams in the classroom for those not wanting to attend in person.
  • Select courses being partially delivered by pre-recorded videos with the remainder of the class being held on campus allowing for in-depth discussions and case simulations.
  • Face-to-face or on campus classes occurring in rooms large enough to ensure social distancing. If this is not possible because of the size of the class or when large rooms are not available, classes will be divided into smaller groupings thereby permitting social distancing with either one-third or one-half of the total enrollment meeting each day.

There are a number of other options faculty are considering and many of these decisions both by students and faculty will depend upon the topic, the professor’s teaching style and the student’s learning style.

We understand it has been a difficult time as we all continue to navigate an uncertain future. To assist us with these decisions, we ask that you fill out a student survey you will receive in the next week or so. We assure you that the feedback we receive from the survey and the concerns you have expressed to us, other administration or student leaders, are being heard and considered as we continue to finalize the schedule for the fall semester.

Thank you,
